MakeupSurgery - Halima Blacker
Halima is a makeup artist, born and bred in Brick Lane, London. The space influences her work, her inspirations and ideas. She has been creating things for as long as she can remember. The very first makeup she owned was a lipstick given to her by an older sister at the age of six. “I fell in love with it the moment I laid eyes on it” Halima says “and I think I ate a little bit of it too!” She was hooked.
“Right from the beginning, I taught myself how to do makeup. As a kid, I would watch Bollywood/Hollwood films and try and recreate the looks of these beautiful women on the faces of my friends and sisters. If I didn't have the exact shade of lipstick or the right blusher, I would make it, using a bit of Vaseline, some food colouring and a whole lot of enthusiasm!”
Halima loves imperfection and experimenting. She says she loves nothing more than putting two colours that look a bit awkward next to one another on the same face. “I love seeing the reaction on people’s faces when this happens, after all, this is what make up is for right, to get the world to react to you.”
Halima does not just do make up. She is constantly creating and experimenting with different forms of art, whether it is oil painting, making and designing jewellery, making videos, photography, making clothes, crafting, styling and cooking. “With each skill I teach myself, I incorporate it into what I love doing the most - expressing myself through makeup art.”
